Allergic Bronchitis

Bronchitis is an inflammation in the lining of the bronchial tubes. Allergic bronchitis is bronchitis caused by allergies. Asthmatic bronchitis occurs when a person has both asthma and bronchitis.

Symptoms

 Symptoms of allergic bronchitis include:

  • a cough that produces mucus
  • wheezing
  • chest tightness
  • tiredness

Bronchitis can also lead to complications. For example, lung infection, pneumonia, can occur. In the most severe cases, pneumonia can lead to an infection in the bloodstream called septicemia. Septicemia is often life-threatening.

What triggers Allergic Bronchitis?

Allergic bronchitis is chronic, and may be caused by exposure to allergy triggers like

  • Tobacco smoke
  • Pollution
  • Dust

How common is Allergic Bronchitis?

The prevalence of allergic bronchitis in India is not specifically documented

How do I know if its Allergic Bronchitis or Asthma

  1. Symptoms:
    • Allergic Bronchitis: Typically presents with symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. These symptoms often occur after exposure to allergens (e.g., pollen, dust mites, pet dander).
    • Asthma: Also involves coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. However, asthma symptoms can vary in intensity and may not always be triggered by allergens.

  1. Triggers:
    • Allergic Bronchitis: Primarily triggered by exposure to allergens.
    • Asthma: Can be triggered by various factors, including allergens, exercise, cold air, infections, stress, and smoke.

  1. Chronicity:
    • Allergic Bronchitis: Often acute or subacute (short-term) and resolves with proper management.
    • Asthma: Chronic condition characterized by recurrent episodes (asthma attacks) that require long-term management.

  1. Diagnostic Tests:
    • Allergic Bronchitis: Diagnosis based on symptoms, medical history, and allergy testing.
    • Asthma: Diagnosis involves lung function tests (spirometry) and assessment of bronchial hyperresponsiveness.

What causes Allergic Bronchitis?

Allergic bronchitis occurs due to exposure to allergens that inflame the lining of the bronchial tubes. Common triggers include:

  1. Cigarette Smoke: Smoking is a significant cause of chronic bronchitis.
  2. Air Pollution: Pollutants in the air can worsen symptoms.
  3. Pollen: Allergic reactions to pollen can lead to bronchitis.
  4. Dust and Mold: Exposure to dust and mold can trigger inflammation.
  5. Chemical Fumes: Certain chemicals irritate the airways.

What are the Risk Factors for Allergic Bronchitis?

Risk factors for allergic bronchitis include:

  1. Smoking: Tobacco products significantly increase the risk.
  2. Occupational Exposure: Jobs involving dust or chemical fumes (e.g., coal mining, textiles, farming) can contribute.
  3. Air Pollution: Living or working in areas with high pollution levels.
  4. Age: Being older than 45.
  5. Gender: Females are more susceptible.
  6. Allergens: Having a family history of allergies

Some Natural Home Remedies for Allergic Bronchits

If you’re dealing with allergic bronchitis, here are some home remedies that may help soothe your symptoms:

  1. Ginger: Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties. You can chew dried, crystallized ginger, make ginger tea, or add fresh ginger to your food.
  2. Garlic: Garlic inhibits the growth of infectious bronchitis viruses. Fresh garlic is best, but you can also take it in capsule form.
  3. Turmeric: Turmeric has antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory effects. Mix powdered turmeric with honey to make a paste or use it in tea.
