Indigestion/Flatulence

Indigestion is a common digestive issue characterized by discomfort in the upper abdomen. It can result from overeating, consuming spicy or fatty foods, or stress.

Flatulence, on the other hand, refers to excessive gas production in the digestive system, leading to bloating and the release of gas through the rectum.

Symptoms

 Indigestion Symptoms:

  • Bloating or a feeling of fullness
  • Burning sensation in the upper abdomen (heartburn)
  • Nausea or an upset stomach
  • Burping and gas
  • Loss of appetite

Flatulence Symptoms:

  • Excessive gas production
  • Abdominal discomfort or bloating
  • Frequent passing of gas
  • Gurgling sounds in the stomach

What Triggers Indigestion and Flatulence?

 Triggers of Indigestion:

  • Overeating or eating too quickly
  • Spicy, oily, or fatty foods
  • Excessive caffeine, alcohol, or carbonated drinks
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Certain medications, like painkillers

Triggers of Flatulence:

  • Consuming gas-producing foods (beans, lentils, dairy, onions, etc.)
  • Swallowing air while eating or drinking
  • Poor digestion or food intolerances
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Bacterial imbalance in the gut

How Common is it?

Indigestion: Studies suggest that around 20–40% of individuals experience indigestion at some point, with varying severity. It can be occasional or chronic, depending on diet and lifestyle.

Flatulence: On average, a healthy person passes gas 10–20 times a day, but excessive flatulence can become uncomfortable due to diet, digestion problems, or gut health.

Causes

Causes of Indigestion:

  • Overeating: Consuming large portions puts extra strain on the digestive system.
  • Spicy, fatty, or acidic foods: These can irritate the stomach lining and slow digestion.
  • Stress and anxiety: The gut is closely linked to the nervous system, making stress a trigger.
  • Caffeine and alcohol: Both can increase stomach acid and contribute to discomfort.
  • Certain medications: Painkillers, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatory drugs may disrupt digestion.

Causes of Flatulence:

  • Gas-producing foods: Beans, dairy, carbonated drinks, and fibrous vegetables can lead to excess gas.
  • Swallowing air: Eating too quickly, chewing gum, or drinking through a straw can cause air buildup.
  • Digestive disorders: Conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or lactose intolerance can contribute.
  • Gut bacteria imbalance: An imbalance in intestinal bacteria may increase gas production.
  • Lack of physical activity: A sedentary lifestyle can slow digestion, leading to bloating.

Risk Factors

 Risk Factors for Indigestion:

  • Age: Older adults may experience slower digestion, making them more prone to indigestion.
  • Dietary habits: Excessive consumption of greasy, spicy, or acidic foods can lead to digestive issues.
  • Smoking and alcohol: Both can irritate the stomach lining and disrupt digestion.
  • Obesity: Excess weight can pressure the digestive system, increasing the risk of acid reflux.
  • Medical conditions: Conditions like GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) or ulcers can contribute to chronic indigestion.

Risk Factors for Flatulence:

  • Diet choices: Foods rich in fibre, dairy, and processed ingredients can cause excessive gas.
  • Gut health: Imbalances in gut bacteria may lead to increased gas production.
  • Food intolerances: Lactose intolerance and gluten sensitivity can cause bloating and gas.
  • Sedentary lifestyle: Lack of physical activity slows digestion and increases bloating risk.
  • Stress and anxiety: Emotional health impacts digestion and can lead to gas-related discomfort.

Home Remedies

 For Indigestion:

  • Ginger tea: Ginger helps stimulate digestion and relieve discomfort.
  • Apple cider vinegar: A teaspoon diluted in warm water can aid digestion.
  • Fennel seeds: Chewing fennel seeds helps relax the digestive tract.
  • Baking soda: A pinch in water can neutralise excess stomach acid.
  • Peppermint tea: Soothes the stomach and reduces bloating.

For Flatulence:

  • Carom seeds (Ajwain) and warm water: Helps with gas and bloating.
  • Chamomile tea: Calms the stomach and relieves excessive gas.
  • Activated charcoal: Can help reduce gas buildup.
  • Probiotic foods: Yoghurt, kefir, and fermented foods support gut health.
  • Light exercise: Walking or gentle yoga can aid digestion and relieve bloating.
